We have always been told to eat the proper foods rich in nutrition to ensure that our bodies get well fed. However, there are times that no matter what is eaten or how much is eaten, when going to the doctor, the examination reveals that not only are you too thin, but that you are also malnourished.
Then the obvious questions come up all pointing in one direction: anorexia nervosa. It is an eating disorder where the food is eaten but is wilfully regurgitated on the false assumption that the body is too fat. Then you answer, you are not anorexic, in fact you eat a lot. How come you are malnourished?
For those who are aware of the existence of Leaky Gut Syndrome, or LGS, the answer may just be that, leaky gut.
What happens in the GI tract is that the food eaten is broken down into molecules, glucose, proteins, amino acids, etc. This is done when the food travels down the length of the GI tract and these essential nutrients are absorbed by the body, hence feeding the body. However, if there is a leaky gut, then there may be complications to the absorption of the nutrients; hence, getting very thin despite the amount of foods eaten.
When there is a leaky gut, molecules that could cause an immune response from the body will escape into the blood. These obviously will be met with the proper response and inflammations and complications can arise.
The inflammations themselves will cause the permeability of the intestinal wall to weaken further and the Leaky Gut Syndrome gets worse. The liver will also react. It will try to manage the toxins and then fail. This will make the liver get overloaded and its full function would be destabilized.
With the destabilization the liver will compensate, or in this case, overcompensate. It will channel the toxins to the gall bladder which will also get dysfunctional. It would produce bile that is harmful and will trigger another set of complications, this time pancreatitis.
In the end, it would be a most dangerous cycle of toxins in the body which could become masked by more well known diseases which would be promptly treated, leaving the source of the disease overlooked and untreated. Eventually, more complications will arise until such time when the real problem finally gets noticed and a leaky gut treatment is started. Only then will the cycle cease and the reason for the malnutrition would be finally answered.
